Creating a Company Culture that is Exciting and Engaging
I don’t know about you but I am tired of reading about cost increases, interest rate hikes, inflation, and all the doom and gloom in our lives today. Lots of things are happening around us that we have zero control over yet they influence our lives in so many ways. This month in spite of how harsh both external & internal forces may be on our businesses, I want to discuss how we can take the time now to focus on the people within our companies. To motivate them and prepare us as a team to use these lessons learned over the past years as a growth opportunity and to better our company. To take the time to create a culture that is exciting and engaging and to cultivate a team that can help endure anything this world has to throw at us as an organization.
At ICG we are making a conscious effort in these times to shift and further develop our company culture. What is “Company Culture”? To me, it is the reason why a company exists. Too many companies’ singular goal is simply to make a profit. Profits are its center and only focus. Yes, as a business we all need to be profitable but the goal is or should be greater than just profits. To me, what we do or what we can do with the profits earned is the goal. How do we better the business? How do we better the people we work with? How do we serve the communities in which we work and live?
Yes, we need to pay the bills, salaries, shareholders, vendors, and the list goes on. But we also need to positively contribute to the people in our company, the industry we are a part of, and the communities we work and live in.
Culture vs Company Culture
I found it interesting to see the difference between googling the terms “Culture” and “Company Culture”. “Culture” relates to the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievements within national, religious, and other social groups. “Company Culture” is the personality of an organization. The sum of both formal and informal systems, behaviors, and shared values. A set of goals, attitudes, and practices that characterize a company through its leadership.

We have always taken great pride in our team and at the heart of the company, we are grateful for each team member and the efforts they make daily. We want our team members to grow and take on new roles. We want our team to be able to take better care of their families today than they could yesterday. To wake up and be proud of the work we as a company do every day.

To help center us around connecting our people we have established a Culture and Engagement committee. This committee is made up of employees from various departments in hopes of representing the company as a whole. One of the many goals this committee has is to create a sense of community and to drive behaviors that are in alignment with our company’s values and mission. To try and accomplish this ICG will begin to host monthly employee gatherings in each of our locations. We want our people to spend a few moments with each other outside of the normal workday and get to know each other. We want them to know how each other’s families are doing. What is exciting in each other’s lives and what areas they may need some help in. To share both successes and hardships and entrust each other to be supportive of each other.

We believe that the end result will be better service to those we work with and for. To make the extra effort. To be proud of the work we do and the dreams of so many we help build.
